Age should never be a barrier to finding love. So if you’ve found yourself falling for someone older, be sure take a look at our list of the 8 things that you need to know about dating older men  You never know when you’ll find love – it often comes from the most surprising places. As we’re focused on deep-down compatibility, who you connect with can be even more surprising. You may find yourself considering dating an older man, and if it’s good enough for the likes of Demi Moore and Catherine Zeta-Jones, why not you? Here are eight things you need to consider when dating an older man. 1. Children – his and yours     There are actually two things to consider here – his children, and your potential children. Firstly, his children.  As a man gets older, it becomes increasingly likely that he will have fathered some children along the way. These children will take up his time, whether they live with him or he spends his weekends with them. You w...

11 Beliefs That Will Kill Your Relationship

We learn about relationships from our parents (who are more likely to be divorced than together), from the media (where Prince Charming originated via Fables comic book), and from what people show us of their own relationships (Facebook vacation pics, anyone?). This less-than-scientific process of cobbling together relationship theory then creates our belief system of what good relationships look like and what we should expect from our partners. It’s not exactly an ideal breeding ground for relationship success. Below is a list of eleven common beliefs that will, at best, set you up for disappointment, and more likely will result in your relationship hitting a wall. 1. Good relationships shouldn’t require work. Good relationships are the hardest work imaginable - mostly because they require us to work on ourselves. You can’t be a fucked up individual in a good relationship and, well, healthy individuals aren’t in fucked up relationships. 2. Fighting is a sign of a bad relation...

A Relationship Is Not A Skill

A few days ago, I happened upon a person asking a question that gets asked very often in non-monogamous or polyamorous groups: What is the one thing you need to make a poly relationship work? Of course, everyone had varying answers. You need good communication. Trust. Love. Oh, and my favorite: self-worth. The top comment was someone saying that basically, if you didn’t believe in your own self-worth, your relationship wouldn’t work. Oh, and that polyamory forces people to come to terms with their lack of self-worth in a way that monogamy doesn’t. You are not your relationships Now, there are so many things wrong with this answer, it’s hard to even know where to begin. And, truthfully, it’s probably because the question itself is flawed. But, let me first address the idea that self-worth is necessary for good relationships. A lot of us doubt our own self-worth. Particularly, if you do not fit the criteria of what this society considers beautiful and worthy, you’re like...

Relationship rules that you must obey.

Human beings crave intimacy, need to love and be loved, and function best when they are. Yet people have much trouble maintaining relationships. It's clear from the many letters I get to my advice column that lots of couples, men and women, have no idea what a healthy relationship even looks like. Because I write about these things, and care about the environments children grow in, I feel obligated to say something.     From many sources and many experts over the years, I have culled some basic rules of relationships. This is by no means an exhaustive list. But it's a necessary list. Print the rules out and pin them up on your refrigerator door. I won't test you on them—but life will: Choose a partner wisely and well. We are attracted to people for all kinds of reasons. They remind us of someone from our past. They shower us with gifts and make us feel important. Evaluate a potential partner as you would a friend: Look at their character, personality, valu...
